How to avoid an inaccessible dialer

All Android devices include a dialer. The dialer is the application that allows users to enter a number so a phone call can be made. Dialers will typically present a big number pad on the screen that users can tap onto to compose the telephone number they want to dial. Sometimes this dialer cannot be accessed with Tecla either because the dialer does not show the highlight that would allow users to identify which number they are currently focused on, or because the dialer only responds to touch events and not to switch input from the Tecla Shield. In such cases, the built-in dialer should be avoided in favour of an accessible alternative.

If you are having trouble using your phone’s dialer with Tecla, please follow the steps below to fix the problem. This solution has been tested on Android 2.x and 4.x devices using the ADW Launcher:

  1. Download and install the Impact Dialer Widget. You can find it at the Google Play store
  2. Go to an empty HOME screen
  3. Long-press on the HOME screen
  4. Select “Widgets”
  5. Look for the “Impact Dialer” widget
  6. If prompted for a skin, select “Default”
  7. You will now be able to use the Impact Dialer Widget directly from the HOME screen to make any calls! Enjoy!
